Bobby from 19 to 24 months old

Here are a few random notes as our little boy turned 2 on April 21, 2001:

19 months

•   Crunch time: When JD does his situps in the bedroom each morning, Bobby now lies down next to me and joins in. Except that instead of raising his chest up, he lifts his two feet up and counts, One! Two! Fwee!

20 months

•   First three-syllable word: Bas-keet-ball!

•   Leg hugger: He comes up to us and hugs the back of our legs.

21 months

•   Wot happeen? Bobby's new favorite expression is "Wot happeen?," which he says at the slightest noise or activity. We explain to him what's going on and he processes it.

•   Potty training: Bobby isn't ready for potty training yet, but he does have a brand new plastic portable potty. When we sit on the john, he follows us into the bathroom to sit on his own seat, fully clothed.

•   Countdown: He can count to five, more or less, though he sometimes skips a number and sometimes counts in base 9: Nine! Eighteen!

22 months

•   Energy crisis: Good gosh, our little guy just started reaching the light switches! He's over 35 inches, with quite a reach.

•   Favorite shows: He has just outgrown "Teletubbies" on PBS. Now his favorite shows are the newly discovered "Dora the Explorer" and "Blue's Clues."

•   Pump up the music: Bobby likes it when we play the CD player during weekend breakfasts, and he pumps his fists excitedly when the theme song comes on for "Malcolm in the Middle" (he yells, "Malcolm!") and "Ally McBeal."

•   Jump!: Bobby practices his jumping skills in the middle of the bed. He especially likes it when Daddy lifts him high in the air, all the way to the ceiling.

•   Favorite books: Bobby loves his books, and has for months. Favorites include "Curious George and the Bunny," "Goodnight Moon," "Larry and Bob's ABCs," "Copycat Faces" and the Maisy pull-the-flaps books.

23 months

•   Fork it over: Bobby's practicing to be a bus boy. He's no longer content to watch his parents put away the silverware; now he goes to the dishwasher, takes a handful of forks and knives, and places them in the silverware drawer. By the third time he did this he began placing them in their proper slots.

•   What's theesss? Bobby has a new favorite expression: "What's theesss?" He goes up to objects, points at them, and asks us to identify them by name: a toothbrush, a refrigerator magnet, the coffee maker. He's very curious.

•   Easter egg hunt: The week before his 2nd birthday, Bobby went to his grandparents' house in Sacramento for an Easter egg hunt. He found all 14 plastic eggs hidden in the back and front yards, and had a blast playing with teens Karyn and Kris Moynahan.

•   Bruised knee: Before the egg hunt began, he slipped on fell on the cement sidewalk in the Schraders' back yard, skinning his knee pretty good. He got his first Band-Aid but didn't take long to remove it.

•   Feed the hungry: Bobby decided to take the initiative and feed Tassie by opening the plastic container, grabbing a scoopful of dried dog food and placing it in her bowl. Mary watched, amazed.

24 months

•   Birthday boy: Family and friends came over for Bobby's 2nd birthday, which conveniently fell on a Saturday. His parents, Peggy, Diane, the Moynihans and our neighbors Lim, Sandy and Lance came over for a barbecue, cake and to watch Bobby open presents. He loved everything, especially the adjustable basketball net that Lance and Karyn put up in his bedroom.

•   Owie! We've got to be more careful monitoring Bobby's TV watching. He's supposed to go to bed at 9 but has lately been pushing it to 9:30 or 10 by slumping onto a blankie and pillow in front of the TV in the family room. Sunday night he was sitting on the couch with Mary, saw a man with his face on fire on "The X-Files" and said, "Owie!" We changed the channel and took him into the bedroom.

•   Dancing fool: Bobby no longer just thrusts his fists out when some good music comes on, like the theme song to "Malcolm in the Middle." He goes into a full-throttle shimmy, dancing away like a dervish. We've got it on videotape.

•   Pasta! Bobby had his first dinner of spaghetti — and enjoyed it with a light topping of pesto.

•   Bedtime for Boo: For the past month Mary has been taking Bobby into our bed to get him to doze off instead of putting him into his crib because he cries so fervently. Then JD or Mary carries him to his crib at 10 or 11 when he's sound asleep.
